UJIMA CENTER VBC 12 - Village Building Convergence 2012
This year, the Ujima center promises to be a formidable hub of VBC activity. We have three main projects: a strawclay retrofit of our classroom and welcoming area with Scott Howard, a humanure and/or greywater system design / installation with Nance Klehm, and a healing oasis front yard garden with Heather Flores. All of these projects promise to be stellar, with an all star cast of instructors and lots of live music and fresh cob oven pizza to keep things FUN!
* Lunches provided, but please bring your own utensils and dishware.
The Strawclay Retrofit
As inhabitants of cities, we do not have much opportunity to construct our dream strawbale home from scratch. Instead we have existing structures in need of remodeling or retrofit. During VBC 12, we will demonstrate how to use natural building techniques to remodel an existing home. We will use straw clay insulation, earthen plaster and natural paints to transform the Ujima Center into a more fully functional year round education and community venue. This is very similar to the project done last year with the Planet Repair Institute: http://planetrepair.org
We will be doing Straw Clay insulation, Earthen Plaster, and Natural Paints with Scott Howard of Earthen Hand Natural Building. Visit Website

Healing Garden Oasis
Heather Flores, permaculture designer and author of Food not Lawns, will guide us through the amazing process of designing and constructing an edible and medicinal garden in Ujima center’s front “lawn”. This one day workshop will give participants a feel for the permaculture design process as well as an opportunity for some hands-on garden skill building! Please join us to transform the front of Ujima Center into an intriguing and magical garden.
